Great fun at the Scout house on our overnight camp cold but everyone had a good time and out Scouts enjoyed covering the orienteering course in their bikes in Sunday.

Limerick 12th at the Parkway BBQ - Photos

As a nice change to hiking or camping we decided to take part in the BBQ Cook Off competition at the Parkway shopping Centre today. Not all of the lads could make it but those that turned up had a great laugh and all stayed longer than I figured they would! Thanks to all the parents for dropping off and collecting on a busy Saturday! And thanks to the Scouts, we have gotten very complimentary comments on both the cooking and the behavior of the group on the day! I even got them to try eating Nettles!!! - ( Safe when Cooked! )

Mangerton Overnight

Well we know our new mountain tents are storm proof and waterproof after a wild night on the Mountain on Friday!
With the local sheep giving us our alarm call on Sat morning!

The weather cleared up for the hike on Sat and all of the scouts enjoyed themselves and arrived home exhausted!

Lots of things coming up for our group. Starting with an overnight on Mangerton Mountain next weekend.

Its an MPC ( Mountain Pursuit Challenge ) Training event to prepare for a full MPC next year.

We Will Meet at car park grid ref V984, 848 at 7pm sharp for check in.

We will be starting hike to base camp at 7:30pm sharp.

Base camp grid ref V992, 834. Check in please.

Set up tents and cook your meal.

Saturday check out of base camp at 9:30am.

Hike to station B grid ref V985, 837 and station D ref 9825, 8275.

Hike to Devil’s punch bowel along the sheep path grid ref V 975,817. Station E.

Continue to top of Mangerton grid ref V 979, 810. Station F.

If the day is good compass, GPS and map work training will be carried out here for those who need training including leaders.

Return via Mangerton East to grid ref V 982, 813 Station G and down to station D,B and camp station C.

The tents can be left standing during the Saturday hike.

Hiking gear will be required and must be carried by each scout member no sharing of personal gear will be allowed on the Saturday hike.

On return from Mangerton mountain teams can cook their dinner.

From about 4pm until 6:30pm we will be fishing loch Garagarry grid ref V 994, 834.

Each Patrol must bring a fishing rod with bubble and fly or fly rod. You can also dig for worms on site if you want.

At 7pm tents will be taken down and we will hike to car park station A to return home.

On June 5th we will be taking part in a BBQ competition at the Parkway shopping centre. We will be there from 12.00 to 5.00 the scouts will be asked to attend for an hour and a half each.

We will also be hoping to have a weekend camp in the Galtees later this year.

We will keep everyone up to date on what is happening through the website and by texts to the scouts contact numbers.

With the Proceeds of our bag pack we have purchased a Samsung B2100 Fully Waterproof Mobile Phone.

This will be the contact phone for our Scouts when on hikes or overnight camps. If any parents need to contact a Scout this is the preferred Contact Method.

The Contact Number will be given to all scouts at Tomorrows Meeting, Any parents looking to contact a leader can now use that number.

Thanks to all the scouts who helped on our bag pack and to all the parents who helped out also.

Clarina Scouts Sponsored 15km Hike

Out Scouts have been issued with their sponsorship cards and any support you can provide is much appreciated.

We have just received our Garda permit number and the cards will be printed this week for our sponsored hike around the Clarina area as shown on the map.

As our group has been inactive for the last 6 years there is nothing in the kitty to cover the running costs of the group and we urgently need to get in some sponsorship, Several local companies have already been of help to us including Carrig Draughting Services, Shanahan Hurleys and Munster Business Directory.

If you or your company would like to become a sponsor just drop us an email - ballybrownscouts@gmail.com or contact any of the Leaders.

Those who sponsor us will get prominent mention on our website, and in a partnership deal we have with Munster Business Directory they will also be added prominently to the directory which is currently getting over 6000 hits a month! So it would be worth your while to take part.

Our Second Overnight Camp in Curraghchase

After being dropped of at the Scout House in Curraghchase at 2pm on Sat we proceeded to the scout field to setup the groups Icelandic Tent. Terrence and the group erected the Tent and we also set up 3 other tents on the site. Then it was off across the woods to the main house for the Photo Treasure Hunt.

Each Scout was given a series or photographs taken all around the main area of Curraghchase and in teams of two they had to find them and take a photo on their phone and also mark the location on the map.

This was to teach teamwork, observation skills, and also map reading.

They all did really well even finding most of the Bonus Pics that were really hard to find!

Then it was back to the scout house and down to the campfire area that is so very well setup there.
Over the fire ( which was lit with Flint and Steel and our Char Cloth ) we cooked burgers and hotdogs as well as Naan Bread.

Then it was back to the Tents for an early night!! (Anyone who has ever gone camping with Scouts will know what that means!!!!).

Even though we got quite a bit of rain during the night everyone stayed dry ( those Icelandic tents were built to last ) Then it was Down Tents and off to the camp area again for Breakfast. After Breakfast we did a bit of Pioneering with Marissa and Pat and made a covered shelter.

Then the prizes for the previous days competition were given out, It was very close with Luke an Shane winning by a nose because of better map marking. There was a prize for all of those who took part so no one went home empty handed. All Prizes were from Radar Stores and will help the Scouts build up the bits and pieces they need.

We lit another fire and toasted the last of the Marshmallows and did our site cleanup before everyone was collected again at 2pm on Sunday. All in all a great weekend!

Scout Overnight Camp at Curraghchase - Sat 20th

We will be Staying overnight at the scout camp field near the scout house at Curraghchase this Sat the 20th March.

This is being used as a run through for the upcoming Survival Weekend.

The scouts will be preparing and cooking their own food which will be provided ( Meat and two Veg !) as required for the county shield. They will be baking their own bread on the campfire and practicing other skills that they have learned about.

We will also be running through our map reading compass work and using bearings, all of which will be needed for upcoming events. There will be a cost of €5 payable on the day to cover the cost of using the Scout House Facilities and camp area and the Main Meal.

Scouts can bring Snacks for the day and Breakfast for the following morning. The Meal will be cooked on Sat Evening. We will be having a campfire in the area provided at the Scout House so bring a pack of Marshmallows! for toasting, This was really enjoyed at our last camp!

Drop off is at 2pm on Sat at the Scout House in Curraghchase and Pickup is at 2pm Sunday again from the Scout house. If anyone needs to adjust those times to suit just let us know. There will be a note going home with each scout including a permission form to be filled in and handed in to a Group Leader on the day.

Char Cloth - Mass production!

Update ! - Well it Works!! well done to all our scouts who this evening managed to light the char cloth made earlier today with flint and steel and also with the sparks from a rock and an iron hammer!! These skills will be put into practice for all future fires we light on camp etc.

Gives us a large supply of char cloth for our fire lighting practice while camping at Curraghchase on Sat week! Char Cloth is cotton burnt with very little air that takes a spark very well and will smolder for ages, a quick blow on it on top of your tinder and its hot food over the fire tonight!

Dear Scout/Scouter

Following is info on the next Scout Section Co Event,

Overnight Survival Hike 27th / 28th March Glatee Mountains & Glen of Aherlow

Patrol: 4 scouts per Scout Leader.

Each patrol should have full equipment for one overnight camp including food.

OS Map 74, 1:50,000

Check-in at car park Grid Ref R-8745,2780 @ 2:30pm Saturday 27th

Start Hike to base camp 3:00pm sharp

Base camp Grid Ref R 8735,25600

Extra Patrol Equipment required for the over night and Sunday base events:

1 Fire by friction bow drill (see Photograph 001) per patrol

1 Coke or 7up can + a small amount of chocolate to shine the bottom of the can per patrol

1 Magnifying glass per patrol if you compass has a magnifying glass that will do

1 Rusty iron object such as a hatchet, strong iron nail etc (see Photograph 002) per patrol

1 Rope per patrol First aid kit 1 Survival bag per Scout 1 Scout Penknife per Scout

1 Flint and Magnesium bar 1 Route card per patrol including compass, map and map case

1 Fishing rod or fishing line with a bubble and fly the barb of the hook should be closed back. This will allow the fish to be returned to the lake without being damaged if you catch one. If you are using a worm then the worm must be taken from the area beside the lake, do not bring worms with you. Clean you fishing rod before you bring on the overnight please we do not want to contaminate the lake in any way.

Each scout to have a full camera film container of char cloth. See instructions for making this in the char.pdf attached.

Each Scout should have a good timber walking stick.

Sunday morning bases will be based on Fire, Survival knots and survival bag. Including a hike to lake Curra Grid Ref R8675,2430 for fishing, this is a hike of 294m vertical height and a horizontal distance of 1.75 kilometres. This is a hike along the old ice road. Patrols will time their hike including breaks and compare their route card with actual timings.

The patrols will arrive back on Sunday to the start point by 3pm.

Scouters are responsible for their own Scouts at all times. Should Scouters wish to meet me before the event then I will arrange an evening for all to go over matters with them.

Please remember that the mountains are cold and can be very cold this time of the year so be prepared.

This event will help you and the Co Team to determine if your group is ready for a Co or National MPC.

Scouting Skills Day at Castleconnell

Great Day today at Castleconnell skills day. There was a wide choice of workshops ranging from knots to lighting fires to tent pitching. Another full day in store tomorrow and we are looking forward to applying all we have learned back at base. Todays Photos and video were all taken on my phone to demonstrate that you dont need an expensive camera to document an event.

A great meeting this week where we tested out our Icelandic Tent ( which I will air out at the weekend )

We need to work on our Pioneering skills so next week we will learn about the lashings and knots needed to create a campsite.

We will initially be practicing on small pieces before moving up to full size in a few weeks!

Orienteering challenge at Curraghchase

We were blessed with the weather today for the Clarina Scouts first Orienteering Challenge!

The fog was gone and the day was quite warm. Layers were shed on the way round as things heated up!

The challenge began at the Scout House with our Scouts being issued with their maps and marking in their navigation points, there were 11 checkpoints in all and a stamp from each was required on your route card to have completed the challenge.

The lads split into 2 groups of 2 ( we had small numbers today due to sickness and Rugby ! )

Terence went with Connor and Alex and I went along with Aaron and Owen. We were there just to supervise and all navigation was up to them! And to their credit bar one or two re routes and backtracking they did a great job. Both teams located all 11 checkpoints taking different routes.

The Scout house was the final point for regrouping for all groups and due to the different age groups from the different units they returned at different times. After everyone was accounted for the times were calculated and Clarina won their age group! A great achievement for our Scouts as they have not had a great amount of Orienteering experience.

The event was very well organised and coordinated ensuring that everyone was safe and sound back at base!

Arrangements for tomorrows Orienteering at Curraghchase

Arrangements for tomorrows orienteering at Curraghchase are as follows -

Meeting up at 9:45 next to the Petrol Station at Kilcornan. We will then transport the

Scouts down to the Scout House.

Same arrangement for Collection.

This will make things easier as the road down to the scout house is narrow and will be quite busy

tomorrow.

Orienteering at Curraghchase - Clarina Scouts Day out

Sponsorship and Fundraising

With the Scout group restarting this year and due to expand greatly with an influx of new members moving up from Cubs later this year, the need for fundraising and sponsorship is very important.

I will be utilising my Internet knowledge to attract sponsorship in many new ways. We will of course be also doing the old reliables of bag packing, car wash sponsored walks/hikes etc.

If you are in a position to offer sponsorship to the Clarina and Ballybrown Scout Group we will ensure that your donations get the maximum exposure both on and offline.

I will be offering a free premium listing on The Munsterbusiness.ie website to all our sponsors and will help them to promote their company or business online free of charge.

First Camp at Curraghchase for Ballybrown Scouts

It was a cold night for our first camp at Curraghchase but a good test of the hardiness of our new Scouts. All came through with flying colours and a great 2 days was had by all. The two days consisted of hikes and orienteering and map reading.
